I stopped contouring the nose by default a couple of years ago. No idea there was a term for how we can unintentionally subscribe to one standard of beauty. Unless a specific request, I try to enhance the natural beauty of the person in front of me based on their goals, not to what has been prescribed by dominant social structures. #themoreyouknow . #SmarterInSeconds: Featurism featuring @colorismhealing Dr. Sarah L. Webb 💚 with @moyoafrika Featurism is the social marginalization and systemic oppression of people based on facial features. In the context of white supremacy, featurism discriminates against people whose features do not conform to Eurocentric standards but other communities and cultures also have their own forms of featurist discrimination. Facial features are used to racialize people or categorize them according to race. And pseudoscientific practices like physiognomy perpetuated racial hierarchies by linking a person’s character and intelligence to their facial features, perpetuating racist hierarchies and justifying discrimination. During World War II, Nazis invented a pseudoscientific system of facial measurement that was supposedly a way of determining racial descent. [source: Smithsonian Magazine] While it might seem like history now these practices are the reason that the “Golden (Facial) Ratio” is seen as the ultimate beauty standard today. And featurism is also the reason why a Black woman with naturally full lips may be viewed as less attractive or desirable than a white woman with lip fillers. Featurism dictates desirability, representation, and opportunities which causes many people to lean on contouring, cosmetic surgery, photo editing and filters to conform. If you want to use those tools that’s ultimately up to you but take care not to project featurism onto other people. And in general, question the standards that you’re upholding and why. I was shopping at Target today. I stopped by the Pride Collection section and grabbed the two items pictured: a baby onesie and kid leggings.

I get to checkout, and as she rang the onesie up, a beep sounded. She was confused, as was I. Much to the embarrassment of myself, the cashier, and the people in line, THESE TWO ITEMS HAD BEEN RECALLED. Now, I know the climate is what it is, and Target is failing to grow a set of ovaries, but let's just stay in the moment. 1. These items were on full display and FOR SALE. 2. I should have been able to purchase them. You can correct your error later. 3. Why is it that this pride collection has been available FOR YEARS, and I have pur hated a pride baby onesie for every new baby in my life. These happened to be for my niece, who will make her grand entrance in October and the leggings for her big sister. 4. When the cashier went to her manager to find out why this issue was happening, said manager shook her head so vehemently I thought her glasses would fly off and said no, absolutely not. She did not bother to co e over to me to explain, offer an apology, nothing. 5. The cashier apologized aexplained that she could not sell me these items. Again, I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO EXPERIENCE THIS AT CHECKOUT. 6. I'm ashamed of you, Target. You know full well that there are outfits in your stores and other places that ACTUALLY sexualize children. 7. These aren't that. 8. How about standing up for what you purport to be your mission and your values in showing respect to each individual. That includes children of LGBTQIA parents who want to show support for their parents, friends, and family. 9. Curious to know what the hell you're going to do with these onesies and kid pride gear? Set an example and tell your busybody Karens that if they don't like it, then Don fucking buy it. As much Pride shit as I've bought from y'all over the years, this hurt my heart. 10. This will not be my last statement on the matter. Heading over to Twitter. And then I'm starting on my letters directly to corporate.
